The acclaimed Spanish-language drama Roma and period comedy The Favourite were the big winners at this year's BAFTA awards. The British film awards ceremony is seen as an indicator of who might succeed at the Oscars later this month.

The Favourite won the most number of awards, claiming seven of the 12 it was nominated for. These include Olivia Coleman for Best Actress and Rachel Weisz for Best Supporting Actress, plus Outstanding British film and Original Screenplay. Roma took home Best Film, as well as Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron and Best Film not in the English language.

Elsewhere, Bohemian Rhapsody star Rami Malek won Best Actor for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury, Mahershala Ali won Best Supporting Actor for Green Book, and Spike Lee collected his first BAFTA for co-writing the screenplay for Blackkklansman.

While superhero movies are rarely represented at the big awards ceremonies outside of technical prizes, there were two notable exceptions this year. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-verse took home Best Animated Film, while Black Panther star Letitia Wright collected the Rising Star Award, which is voted on by the public. Black Panther also won the Best Special Visual Effects award.
